WHAT ARE SOME OF TODAY'S TRAVEL TRENDS?

Our generation is leaning towards placing value on experiences, rather than material goods. We see a lot more activity-specific travel - surfing, diving or yoga retreats. As well as a lot more eco-conscious travel. People want to support hotels that practice sustainability and give back to their community.

WHAT ARE SOME NEW DESTINATIONS TO VISIT IN 2017?

Cooler climate destinations are becoming more popular due to the rise of "Adventure Travel" - think Iceland, Norway, Patagonia. Exotic places like Sri Lanka are gaining popularity for its culture and wildlife. Divers and tiki lovers should be looking into visiting Tanzania for its many unique eco hotels and undiscovered islands. Another hot destination today is Colombia - a perfect combination of cuisine (ceviche-everything), beautiful beaches, national parks and nightlife. Don't forget about classic honeymoon destinations like Greece, Tulum and Bali, still going strong and for a reason.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD YOU BOOK YOUR HONEYMOON?

Hotels should be booked as far in advance as possible (6-8 months is recommended), since unlike airfare, you can usually cancel or modify your reservation at least 2 weeks beforehand. If you wait too long, you may still be able to reserve the hotel you desire, but the lowest rate rooms get booked up very fast.

WHAT KIND OF PLANNING CAN BE LEFT TO LAST MINUTE?

A lot of destination-specific activities are best to book while you are there. You never know if you will be hungover or just too exhausted to do a surf lesson or a 5am hot air balloon ride. Weather can also be a factor. (Snorkelling trip in a thunderstorm anyone?) Exclusions apply to activities like mountain climbing (There is a waiting list of a few months to climb Machu Picchu), or if your stay is not long enough to gamble with certain activities being booked up.

WHAT ADVISE CAN YOU GIVE ON CHOOSING A HONEYMOON DESTINATION THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU?

Don't replicate someone else's honeymoon and be more open-minded when planning your own. Don’t be afraid to try new things - your honeymoon should be a time to see new places and discover something together. If possible, use this time to travel further than you normally would.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO LEAVE FOR YOUR HONEYMOON?

Leaving 2 to 6 months after the wedding is perfect - you will let the dust settle and get excited for your next adventure together. Just make sure you pick the right destination if you have a certain season in mind - places like Europe are best in the summer and South America or the Caribbean is where you want to be in the winter.

WHY USE THE HELP OF A TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL?

Using a travel professional's help will take out all the heavy lifting from planning your trip. We have a strong relationships with many hotels, and often have access to rooms that appear booked up as well as upgrades and extras. Our booking process starts with you filling out a questionnaire and answering questions on anything from how far you would like to travel to your food preference to whether you want to try diving or live on a secluded island.
