You are calm; the ancient rocks beneath you embedded with lichen, cushion and emit a comfortable and balanced sacred energy through your body. Each breath, an abundance of oxygen-rich air as you feel the weight of the world dissipate around you. An animal in the distance makes a break through the dense bush, a hawk soars overhead. A clean, crisp breeze carries with it the scent of wildflowers while lush flora and fauna remind you of the beauty and magic of this fertile landscape. These lands, in their entirety, perfectly play host to the human collective.
The experience of ones exploration within the remaining untouched reaches of the earth’s continents brings with it many healing properties. This knowledge practised and shared by our ancestors seems to have been misplaced and undervalued in present day teachings and society. It is our generation and the generations to come that must revisit these principles and make a conscious decision of how to protect, nourish and rebuild our once respected wild lands.
Inner land masses rich with dense ancient forests, vast tundra, rolling plateaus, seemingly endless deserts and ever-changing grassy plains, all evolved over millions of years, as if moulded by a magician in a laboratory. These sedimentary layers are the foundations that withhold the only known home to oxygen-breathing mammals in our known universe.
When you seek to experience the fullest from these landscape you must remove the idea of the importance of the destination and embrace the journey. You are not hiking to a place but bathing in the moment among your environment. Whether this be in lush jungle or rolling meadows, you will truly be in the right place to rebuild and reconnect. It is that moment of being present that true mindfulness occurs and the interconnectedness of our natural environment seems to act as the vehicle driving us towards and inside of it.
The power and wisdom of a 250 foot, quiet giant that was in that very spot before your great grandparents were born. The strength of the tectonic plates that make up the continental shelves rich in minerals and organic material as old as the stars in our galaxy. It is these ideas and concepts that resonate feelings of stability and decrease your cortisol levels. When you find yourself entrenched in these rich ecosystems, time seems to slow down as does your heart rate and blood pressure. You stop and refocus as your retinas become more relaxed from the lack of artificial deflections of light we are so used to in man-made urban metropolis’. This softens your gaze and releases tension in your facial muscles making you more attentive, relaxed and receptive. The moist, nutrient-rich earth acting as aromatherapy increasing your serotonin levels elevating your overall mood. The release of antimicrobial essential oils from the soil, trees and foliage called phytoncides, boosts your immune system. This in turn reducing stress, anxiety, confusion and, ultimately, creating an arena for the healing of your mind and body.
As we explore the word “grounding” we must think of the literal, scientific, philosophical and spiritual meanings behind it and allow it be our own interpretation. This state of being centred or grounded is nourished by allowing true detachment from our societal norms and out into the world around us. It is the discovery of ourselves while traveling to these protected natural landscapes, that we are exposed to a new perspective and way of being.
It is here that we learn that our differences actually really stem from the interconnectedness of all things. This act of “ losing yourself” in the art of travel, can be more accurately perceived as the art of placing aside preconceived conditionings and returning to oneself. Thus creating the sensation of feeling at home, not because our surroundings are familiar, but because we are at home within our own bodies, because we are at home within nature, at home within these lands.
In the pursuit of exploring and traversing these far off lands, you must let the mystery pull you away from the safety and comfort of the roads and street signs, so you may come to know the purity of who you really are - a being aligned in both body, mind and spirit.
To truly experience the connection with our home mother earth one must actively participate in the appreciation and development of being and living within it.
