Envision yourself floating on your back, the warm mineral rich water kisses your bronzed skin and buoyantly supports every inch of your being. Reaching a near zero gravity state you feel your muscles begin to relax, the waves gently ebb and flow around you and you begin to tune into your inner world. Your senses are enhanced, your heart rate slows and your breathing profoundly deepens as you feel at one with the body of water that surrounds you. The aroma of fresh, recently caught fish cooking over a fire in the distance comforts you with the knowledge that an omega rich meal is about to be served. You carefully open your eyes to the golden sun ensconced in the clouds as the breeze gently nudges them across the blue sky above. The feeling of tranquility washes over you, and you are mindful once again of your surroundings.
There is no denying the healing effects of water, more notably the sea, and how its natural tidal rhythms can be likened to the changing tides within us, the ones that seemingly crash over us from out of nowhere and yet with time subside on their own. It is no wonder that by being by the sea we are reminded of this ability to wash away any negative energies and realign our energetic fields to a state of calm. It is here that we rediscover our natural ability to reach that inner state of tranquility, deep alignment and focus.
Both water and salt have long been revered as energetically cleansing substances and it is now being scientifically proven that the minerals found seaside have a positive effect on brain waves and our parasympathetic nervous system (the system that relaxes our bodies and quiets the mind). Magnesium absorption can suppress the ability of the hippocampus to stimulate the ultimate release of stress hormones and can act as the blood brain barrier to prevent the entrance of stress hormones to the brain. Bathing in magnesium rich seawater can improve moisture retention in the skin and other mineral salts such as sodium and iodine provide wound healing properties.
It is not only seawater that benefits our bodies but the life that swims and dwells within it- the omega rich fatty fish and algae. Omega 3 fatty acids help all animals avoid sensory overload, and help us to improve our information processing capabilities. Being seaside quite literally nourishes both your body, mind and nervous system.
In order to reach this aligned state of flow, a state of deep enjoyment, creativity and total involvement with life, one must not only find pleasure in what they are doing, but also purpose. A purpose that can be fulfilled not only by indulging in travels most tantalizing experiential pleasures, but by doing so in a way that helps to nurture and honour what many historically considered divine, healing and purifying - our life sustaining oceans, rivers, seas and lakes.
This flow state becomes more pronounced as we are pulled out of our most familiar, socially constructed boxes, out into the present moment, out into the world around us. It is when we discover a new favourite dish, song or cultural norm while traveling to pristinely protected natural landscapes, that we are exposed to a new perspective and way of being in the world. It is here that we learn that our differences actually really stem from the interconnectedness of all things. This act of “ losing yourself” in the art of travel, can be more accurately perceived as the art of placing aside preconceived conditionings and returning to oneself. Thus creating the sensation of feeling at home, not because our surroundings are familiar, but because we are at home within our own bodies, because we are at home within nature, at home within the sea.
In the pursuit of exploring the deeper water of your being through travel, you must let the mystery pull you away from the safety of the shore, so you may come to know the purity of who you really are - a being aligned in both body, mind and spirit. Our deepest hunger is that of connection with our source, our essence; this is what motivates our lives - to remember from what we came, to rejoice in the mystery, to dance with all of life- to revive the spirit. It is done by coming into communion with the unknown, while feeling cradled or upheld by a reverberating trust we cannot give a word or name, a trust that comes from being reconnected to that which we are made of. It is no coincidence that the body is on average 60% water - return to whatever body of water speaks to you, return to your source.
