Living on the Water: Lakes, Fjords, and Rivers

Water has always shaped how we travel. Long before roads crossed mountains and deserts, rivers and coastlines defined routes through landscapes, carving valleys, nourishing forests, and creating natural corridors where wildlife and human life gather. Today, some of the most memorable hotels sit precisely where land and water meet, places where the horizon is fluid and the rhythm of the day is guided by tides, currents, and light reflecting off the surface.

Across the world, water landscapes take many forms. In Norway, deep fjords cut through glacial mountains, their cold saltwater channels stretching inland beneath sheer cliffs. In Europe’s alpine regions, freshwater lakes lie still beneath forests and snow-capped peaks. Tropical rivers wind through jungle ecosystems alive with birds, insects, and shifting mist, while lagoons and coastal wetlands host migratory wildlife and shifting sands. Each geography shapes a different relationship between architecture and nature.

Hotels built along water must respond to these forces. Some extend directly above the shoreline, their glass walls reflecting shifting skies and tides. Others settle quietly along rivers or lakes, where morning mist and birdsong replace the sound of waves. These stays offer a rare balance: serenity paired with adventure beyond the water’s edge. Kayaking through fjords, swimming in freshwater lakes, following jungle rivers, or watching tides reshape the coastline become part of the daily rhythm. Together, they reveal how water continues to define some of the world’s most extraordinary places to stay.

Montestyria

Mariazell, Styria, Austria

In the Austrian Alps, where forested slopes descend toward clear mountain lakes, Montestyria sits quietly above the alpine town of Mariazell. The property lies within the Mariazellerland region, surrounded by the Hochschwab and Ötscher mountain ranges, where dense forests, alpine meadows, and freshwater lakes shape the landscape. Just below the hotel, Lake Erlauf reflects the surrounding peaks, its cold, crystalline waters fed by mountain streams and snowmelt.

The architecture departs from the traditional Alpine lodge. Instead, a small collection of modern chalets combines minimalist design with natural pine wood and panoramic glazing, framing the mountains and forests beyond. Each chalet feels like a private retreat within the landscape, complete with terraces, fireplaces, and private wellness spaces. Days unfold slowly here: morning swims from the hotel’s private bathing jetty on the lake, hikes through alpine forests, cycling along mountain trails, and evenings spent watching light fade across the peaks.

Ocama

Río San Juan Region, Dominican Republic

Along the remote northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Ocama sits within a tropical landscape where rivers, forest, and ocean converge. The property lies near the mouth of the Río San Juan, where freshwater flows through mangroves before meeting the Atlantic in a network of lagoons and coastal wetlands. The surrounding region is rich with biodiversity, home to tropical birdlife, dense vegetation, and quiet beaches shaped by limestone cliffs and emerald water.

Architecture here embraces openness and climate. Villas are designed with natural materials, wide terraces, and shaded outdoor living spaces that invite the ocean breeze. Rather than isolating guests from the landscape, the design encourages immersion, with views of palms, rivers, and distant coastline woven into daily life. Days often begin with swims in calm lagoons or boat journeys along mangrove-lined rivers, followed by afternoons exploring hidden beaches or snorkeling in nearby coves.

Il Sereno

Lake Como, Lombardy, Italy

Along the quiet eastern shore of Lake Como, Il Sereno sits directly on the water’s edge where alpine mountains descend steeply into the lake’s deep, glacial waters. This part of northern Italy is defined by freshwater landscapes shaped by glaciers thousands of years ago. Narrow villages, cypress trees, and historic villas dot the shoreline, while the lake itself stretches through a dramatic valley framed by steep peaks and forested slopes.

Designed by Patricia Urquiola, Il Sereno represents a contemporary interpretation of the classic Lake Como villa. The low horizontal structure extends along the shoreline, clad in stone, bronze, and wood that echo the surrounding landscape. Floor-to-ceiling glass opens each suite directly toward the lake, while private terraces hover above the water. Experiences unfold through the rhythm of the lake itself: swimming from the floating dock, exploring quiet villages by boat, or drifting across the still water at sunset. Il Sereno captures a modern side of Lake Como, where architecture, landscape, and freshwater horizon merge into a single calm, immersive view.

Manshausen

Steigen Archipelago, Norway

Far north within the Arctic Circle, Manshausen Island Resort sits on a remote island in Norway’s Steigen Archipelago. The surrounding waters are part of a vast coastal system of fjords and island channels shaped by glacial geology. Snow-dusted peaks rise from the sea while the cold, clear waters below support rich marine ecosystems.

The hotel’s sea cabins are minimalist structures of wood, glass, and steel that extend directly over the shoreline. Large glass façades frame uninterrupted views of the sea, sky, and distant Lofoten mountains, allowing guests to experience the constantly shifting Arctic light. Outdoor adventure defines the stay: sea kayaking between islands, fishing in deep fjord waters, winter aurora watching, or summer hikes across the rugged archipelago landscape.

Days are spent hiking along the river, exploring nearby fjords, or visiting waterfalls hidden within the forest.

Koh Andet Island, Tatai River, Cambodia

Deep within Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains, Canvas & Orchids Retreat sits on Koh Andet, a small island set in the middle of the Tatai River. This remote freshwater landscape is defined by dense rainforest, winding rivers, and mangrove ecosystems that flow toward the Gulf of Thailand. The region remains one of Southeast Asia’s most biodiverse areas, where hornbills move through the forest canopy and the river’s calm surface reflects shifting clouds and jungle silhouettes.

The architecture keeps a light footprint, blending natural materials and open-air design that allows guests to feel close to the surrounding jungle. Wide terraces overlook the slow-moving river, where kayaks drift quietly past mangroves and fishermen navigate traditional boats. Days are shaped by the river itself: paddling through hidden channels, visiting nearby waterfalls, or simply watching mist rise from the rainforest at dawn.
